Chosen for your windows

Finish your windows with a custom valance.

Howard's Draperies designs custom valances and window top treatments in Boulder, Colorado. Use them to conceal hardware, add fabric above the glass, or coordinate with your drapery.

We’ll compare fabrics and shapes with your existing furnishings, then plan the height and mounting position. A top treatment should leave enough space for the blind, shade, or drapery beneath it to move freely.

Valance or cornice: which look do you prefer?

A valance is a soft fabric treatment across the top of a window. It can introduce pattern, soften the frame, or conceal a rod. Custom window cornices have a more structured shape and can be upholstered or finished to relate to your trim.

Neither replaces a shade or drapery panel when you need to cover the glass. We’ll help you coordinate the top treatment with the covering beneath it.

Keep the window in proportion

The height and width of a top treatment affect how much glass remains visible. We’ll look at the ceiling, trim, and nearby windows before choosing its size and mounting position.

Bring your ideas for color and pattern. A fabric used in custom drapery can also connect a valance to the rest of the room, while a contrasting fabric can make the window more noticeable.

Questions about window top treatments

Can a valance go over existing blinds or shades?

Often, yes. We’ll check the headrail and controls and leave room for the treatment underneath to open and close.

Will a top treatment make the room darker?

It may cover some glass at the top of the window. We’ll discuss how much daylight you want to keep and whether mounting it higher is practical for your room.
